Helleborus and Companion Plants

Helleborus are a very tough plant for shade. They can thrive in more sun than a hosta. You can use them as a specimen plant, a border plant, or as a ground cover. Much work has been done with the helleborus plant in the last 15 years. They now come in a variety of flower colors, both single flowers and double flowers, and in a wide range of foliage shapes. Most helleborus are evergreen. The many different types bloom for about 2 1/2 to 3 months. Some start in December and others start in January and February. Freezes do not hurt the blooms.

We have spent several years collecting as many flower colors and foliage types as we can. There are several hundred planted in our display gardens and the number will greatly increase during the next few years.

You are invited to come out Monday through Saturday any time in the month of March that  weather permits and you have available. That will be the peak bloom for most of them that we have planted in our display gardens so far. Our office hours during that time period will be 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM.
